Founder's Log #0: Things don’t always go as planned

Published on: | by Uditha Atukorala

I had to shut down my last startup a few months ago. I failed as a solopreneur, not for the first time. I know I made mistakes and didn’t focus on what’s important, “building something that users want”. I want to try again…

For the past few months, since shutting down my last startup, I’ve been taking on contract gigs to build up my personal savings. On the side, I’ve been putting together a founding team. By early August, I’ve assembled a four-person founding team (including myself). We brainstormed a few ideas on how to take my previously failed startup idea to build a global scale authorization as a service, and make it a success.

Things were moving slow, no one was working on the startup full-time, not even part-time. Everyone put in the effort when they can. This isn’t working.

By late August, I’ve scraped some funds together from my personal savings to pay one founding member to go full-time. They were on holiday, backpacking trough Scottish countryside, and I was waiting for them to come back. I have a plan! I was excited, and full of hope.

This morning I got a message from the founding member, they’ve been offered a new job as a Founding Engineer. It sounds like an awesome opportunity and I’m happy for them!

Now my plan isn’t going to work. I’ve lost one founding member and the other two can’t go full-time immediately.

I need a new plan!
