Founder's Log #-1: I have failed as a founder

Published on: | by Uditha Atukorala

I’m shutting down the startup I’ve been working on for the past 8 months and ending my solopreneurship.

I’m disappointed, frustrated and annoyed.

I wanted to build a global scale authorisation as a service that doesn’t require users to create and maintain an authorisation model using a custom DSL, a unique advantage over the competition. I already I have an open-source project that shows this could work.

But I failed on the execution. I didn’t focus on building the product but instead got distracted by chasing after investors and cold outreach campaigns when I don’t have means to convert leads into paying customers.

I spent days coming up with the name for my startup, looking at domain availability and company name availability, but failed to identify there’s another company in London using the same name as a trading name.

I gave 20% of equity to a venture studio and paid $15k in fees. Now I’m running out of my personal savings.

I f*k’d up!

I need to try again. First step is to shut down the company with a messy cap table and a name that conflicts with another’s trading name.

Onwards to a fresh start…
